Second opinion on Indian fisherman’s death

By Chris Kamalendran

A panel of Judicial Medical Officers has given a second opinion in connection with the death of an Indian fisherman whose body was found off Delft Island, rejecting the post-mortem report filed by the JMO in Jaffna.

The panel headed by Colombo JMO Ananda Samarasekara consisted of the Kandy JMO Dr. A.D.Seneviratne and Colombo South JMO Dr. Sunil Kumara. Dr. Samarasekara told the Sunday Times that the panel has concluded its findings and sent the report to the Kayts Magistrate on Friday.
“There were some unclear areas in the findings conducted in the previous report,” Dr Samarasekara said.

Earlier the Jaffna JMO Dr. S. Sivaruban in his initial report said that there were injuries caused to the fisherman by beating and other injuries on the chest, left thigh, right arm and right toe. In addition there were marks in the rear of the body.

However, after the report was submitted to the Kayts Magistrate the Court had sought a second opinion from a panel of senior JMOs. The Indian fisherman was identified as one of the four persons who had gone missing after their vessel was intercepted off Delft Island on April 2. His body was found a week later and the post-mortem conducted on April 9 in the presence of the family members who were allowed entry to Jaffna by sea.

The body was buried in Jaffna and some of the organs were sent to Colombo. The Jaffna JMO had been summoned to Colombo where his report was further studied before the panel refused to accept his findings.

The death of the four fishermen came after four Sri Lanka Navy personnel went missing in March this year.
