Life on the beach including catamarans and boats and the humble fishermen are the focus of Subadrage Nuwan Nalaka’s exhibition ‘A voyage through boats’ on at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery today.
Visiting beautiful towns such as Negombo, Hikkaduwa, Galle and Matara, Nuwan has captured not only the various shapes and sizes of these boats, the colourful sails and nets but also the fishermen whose livelihood depends on them.
His paintings are not limited to the shores of Sri Lanka but also encompass India as the artist has been living across the Palk Straits for 10 years. The Indian experience has added depth to his work because he has been able to compare and contrast the fishing folk in the two neighbouring countries.
Nuwan has used large canvases with the hope of producing minute details,
along with rich colour and white liberally.
The most important element of the paintings is the reflection on water, not only creating a mood of tranquillity and peace, according to Nuwan, but also helping to achieve a balance, offsetting the dominance of vertical lines.
