The latest of the Pirates of Caribbean series is now successfully being screened at the Majestic cinema Colombo.
The movie directed by Rob Marshall shows Johnny Depp starring as Captain Jack Sparrow with Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter are after it too.
Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penélope Cruz), and he’s not sure if it’s love -- or if she’s a ruthless con artiste who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth.
When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.
The fourth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, the film is based on the novel On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers.
‘Rome on Fire’ in town
Veteran playwright Bandula Vithanage’s latest play ‘Romaya Gini Gani-2’ (Rome on Fire -2) will go on the boards at 3.30 pm and 6.30 pm on Saturday July 9 at Kularatne Hall at Ananda College, Maradana.
Based on Cooney’s play ‘Caught in the net’, ‘Romaya Gini Gani-2’ featuring Sampath Tennakone, Rathna Lalani Jayakody, Ayesha Dissanayake, Upali Bandara, Thilini Priyanwada, Ishara Wickremasinghe and Bandula himself. Produced by Roger Seneviratne, Vajira Kumari Vithanage handles the stage setting, Wasantha Kumara does the stage lighting while Jagath Padmasiri does the make up and Edward Chandrasiri is the Production Manager.
Sarathchandra plays at the Wendt
A theatre festival of the late great playwright Prof. Ediriweera Sarathchandra will be held from July 8 to 10 at the Lionel Wendt theatre, Colombo.
The pioneering dramatist’s two main genius productions “Maname” and “Sinhabahu” the stylized plays will go on the boards on July 8 and 10 while the comedy “Kapuwa Kapothi” will be on July 9.
Each play will be staged at 3.30p m and 7 pm and all seats are box planned and tickets are available at the Lionel Wendt theatre office.

Nuwan and Collin have been friends since their school days back at Presidents College Maharagama. Nuwan had a knack for music and at a young age he began to study music and sound engineering. It was after this that Nuwan began experimenting with music and teamed up with Collin, who himself had been voice trained and was a budding lyricist.
The two young artistesthen worked hard to release their first studio album titled ‘Gemba’ which showcased these young musicians experimental style. Their hard work paid off in 2010, Nuwan & Collin as they were awarded ‘Best Concept Music Video’ and ‘Best Experimental Music Video’ for their debut single “Gemba” at the Derana Music Video Awards.
Having thoroughly enjoyed the success of their first single they then launched the second single titled ‘Bola Rada’, which like its predecessor caught on extremely well and featured another talented Sri Lankan artiste, Rukshan Mark.
Nuwan and Collin not only produce their own music but they are also involved in the production of many other budding talented artistes in the Sri Lankan music scene.
Nuwan also showcased his talents by producing Manjula Pushpakumara’s single “Lakmani” which was release for our countries Independence Day. Nuwan is also currently producing Manjula’s second studio album.

Cinematic journey Through American History
American Center Colombo takes cinemagoers on a cinematic journey through American history with its weekly movies in the month of July starting with ‘1776’.
This 1972 American musical film directed by Peter H. Hunt is based on the 1969 stage musical of the same name. This historically informative but playful musical about the signing of the Declaration of Independence the film is directed by Peter H. Hunt. Much of the dialogue for the movie comes from diaries, letters, and memoirs written by the actual historical figures.
The film will be screened at 6 pm on July 5 at the American Center, Galle Road, Colombo 3.
