Percy Abeysekera or more known as the one man cheering squad, following and cheering the Sri Lankan cricket team for the past six decades turned 75 yesterday. He gained recognition right around the cricketing world for his patriotism and love for the sport.

According to inimitable Percy, there is hardly a cricket ground in the world that he has performed circumference with the Lion flag. Percy who was born on July 30, 1936 in Sri Lanka’s southern city of Balapitiya presently lives in Kalutara. During his younger days Percy was a good cricketer, a left handed batsman and a leg-spinner.
“I have cheered Sri Lanka for thirty years without the flag and further 30 years with the flag. Throughout these years I have witnessed Sir Don Bradman in action, received many accolades from all cricket playing countries of the world and at the same time was had been an object of criticism for many. It’s been a great and memorable journey and I’m ever grateful for my family, friends and all those who adore me. My love for cricket will never die unless I do so,” Percy said.
Percy has been a long-serving employee at ACL Cables as a Public Relations Consultant. He will complete 50 years of service with the establishment next year. The Kalutara Town Club yesterday evening threw a surprise birthday party for the famous figure in Sri Lanka cricket at its club premises.
The Sunday Times also learns that the members of the Balapitiya Pradeshiya Sabha (Town Council), the governing body of his ancestral hometown, has unanimously agreed to name a road in the town after Percy’s name for the yeomen service he rendered to country’s cricket and the honour he brought to his hometown. - NA |
