An enthusiastic group of
30 Funday Times Club members spent an interesting and informative morning at Nuga Gama, Cinnamon Grand on August 8, 2011. It was in celebration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, which falls on August 9.
After the customary tour of
Nuga Gama with Uncle Gamini, the Village Headman, they had a
session on Tribes around the World and the impact of globalization on Indigenous People discussed by Aunty Tharika, followed by a Q & A
session.
A Veddah dance performance by Werapitiya Dance Troupe was next on the agenda.
A short discourse on Tribal Art with charcoal by
Aunty Aruni was followed by the kids trying their hand at charcoal
drawing, sketching from the scenes around Nuga Gama. Their very creditable efforts were displayed at the Salawa.
A demonstration of Archery by the Colombo School of Archery was greatly appreciated by the children who were then given a chance of shooting at a target.
Chef Ronnie then explained to the participants the burning of meat in kebabs and the use of salt and honey for preservation.
Finally the kids enjoyed a yummy meal
including Veddah style barbecued kebabs, before a group photo and presentation of gifts and prizes.
