My favourite book

By Kavini Subodhya (13 years), Princess of Wales College, Moratuwa

Reading makes a person complete with knowledge. We have plenty of reading materials around us. They are novels, magazines, newspapers and internet. Among these reading materials, books are most important for me. Since they are readily available in our school library, it does not cost me as well.
I like to read novels the most.

My favourite novel is ‘Thagi Godai’, written by the famous novelist Gunaratha Ekanayake. The story is about a poor young boy who succeeds in life by earning money for his bravery, cleverness and education. He had to undergo severe hardships early in life. He had a big family and his father died when he was young. He had to shoulder the burden of his family.

Fortune came his way after he joined his uncle in farming. He won a farming competition twice and won a lot of prizes and money and he was showered with praise since he was still a young boy.

Among his braveries were the capture of a dangerous crocodile to save his brother, the capture of a thief and saving a child from a team of treasure hunters. The main character is Saman. He was an illustrious student. Ultimately he became a good businessman and lived very happily. This story gives an
example on how we could achieve success in life.

How I spent my holidays

By Vimarshee Gunawardana (Grade 4), Musaeus College

I spent my holidays with my parents and grandparents. My grandparents live in Kalutara. We went there during a weekend. We visited the Kalutara Bo-tree and the beach. My grandfather had tied up a swing for us. My brother and I enjoyed swinging on it. My grandmother made delicious food for us to eat. We played and we also found time to study.

One day we went to spend the day at a beach hotel. I swam in the pool and enjoyed it very much. From Kalutara we all proceeded to Galle. We saw the Galle Fort and many other interesting places. After a few days we returned home and spent some enjoyable moments remembering our trip while looking
at the photographs taken.

The river flows in me

By Hyunbin Oh  (Form 3), British School in Colombo

What relaxes me most is when I sit at the piano, playing one of my favorite Iruma’s songs. I feel as if I have travelled into a world of my own. The experience I enjoy then is that of a movie director directing his creation – a love story with its usual expectations and disappointments and ending on a sad note.

When my fingers flow without effort, beautiful thoughts, and fantasies just flow to my mind like a never ending river. It is one flow of music and thoughts, which are inseparable.

The well-known saying that music soothes the mind and tames even a wild beast is absolutely true. Such is the effect on me when playing my favourite songs on the piano. It is like meditation where I am oblivious to what is happening around me. I am transported into a world of Iruma and his characters.
How very true when doctors say that music acts as a therapy for humans as well as for plants.

Playing the piano soothes me, calms my nerves. I also cry because of music sometimes. Ludwig Van Beethoven said, "Music should strike fire from the heart of man, and bring tears from the eyes of woman."
