Sri Lankan scientists explore the ocean resources

Sri Lanka’s scientific fraternity is to be provided with opportunities to actively involve in research on better understanding the ocean and its resources around Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) has initiated action to promote development –focused research specially on marine resources enhancing the confidence of the people towards science said Prof. Dhammika Tantrigoda, President of the SLAAS in an interview with the Business Times.

A senior professor of physics at Sri Jayawardenapura University, Prof. Tantrigoda is a leading Geophysicist in Sri Lanka and an expert on mathematical computational physics. He said the SLAAS will advice the authorities on harnessing marine resources while paying serious attention on their conservation and related environmental issues.

The SLAAS 67th annual sessions opens tomorrow under the theme “Understanding, Harnessing and Conserving the Ocean around Sri Lanka: Role of the Scientist” at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.
Dr. Harsh Gupta, former Director of National Geophysical Research Institute of India and former secretary to the ministry of ocean development, India is the chief guest with Prof. R. Shanker of the University of Bangalore, a marine geologist, delivering the key note address.

Prof. Keerti Tennekoon of the Cincinnati University, USA will make a presentation on neutrino physics at the scientific sessions hosted by the Sri Jayawardenapura University. Referring to major projects carried out during his tenure of office as SLAAS President, he revealed that the SLAAS auditorium has been renovated as a modern auditorium with all facilities while Dilmah Conservation in partnership with the SLAAS and Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka (FOGSL), University of Colombo launched a series of initiatives to commemorate World Environment Day.
