The Sri Lanka Ports Authority will be commencing the new online clearing system in about 3-4 months for goods to be taken delivery of at the port.
The introduction of this online clearing system initiated by the ports authorities and the Sri Lanka Customs is likely to result in end of wharf clerks, Vehicle Importers Association President Yoga Perera told the Business Times.
He further said that with the shift of vehicle imports to Hambantota, the industry will continue to gain as there will be a simplified system in place. In this respect, it will also allow direct delivery to be carried out, he said.
Mr. Perera also said that the industry was pleased in view of the budget proposals put forward by the government.
He asserted that the government made a “very good move” by not imposing any duty in order to ensure they would be capable of providing a vehicle at a reasonable price to consumers.
