Nearly 380 athletes were felicitated at the annual awards ceremony of Vidura College, Colombo at Nawarangahala and the main auditorium of Royal College in Colombo on December 14.
This awards ceremony was organized for the second year, where the school recognized the achievements of boys and girls of all age groups on sports and extra curricular activities.
Two hundred and fifty seven received merit awards on sports while another 18 were recognized for extra curricular activities. Replicas were awarded to 30 achievers who were recognized as best performers. This was in addition to four awards given away for two scouts and two girl guides.
The boys and girls badminton teams and the table tennis teams, which comprised 55 athletes, also received replicas for team performances. Sportsmen and women who represented at athletics, cricket, hockey, basketball, rugby, swimming, chess, badminton, netball, tennis, karate and table tennis received merits and replicas.

Out of the entire list, Setawya Mudalige was the only athlete to receive colours during the awards night for this year. She received her colours in athletics where she has been performing exceptionally well since her childhood. Setawya has won several titles in athletics at zonal meets, provincial championships and at All-Island Schools Games for many years. Her main events are the 100m, 200m and long jump. As a budding athlete, Setawya has won junior and senior school athletic meets for many years and has also won colours at Sri Lanka Schools Games conducted by the Ministry of Education. At present she is a member of the Sri Lanka Junior athletics pool. Setawya was also awarded a scholarship to continue her studies at Vidura College.
The night glittered when Eshani Palihena was named the Sports Star of the Year for 2011. Eshani has been a promising all-rounder who excelled in athletics and badminton since the start as an Under-11 athlete. She has won the best athlete’s awards at the age groups of Under-11, 13 and 15 at the Nugegoda and Battaramulla Circuit Meets since 2009. She has also taken part in the Western Province and Junior Public School meets and has qualified for the 100m and 200m finals.
In badminton, Eshani was crowned as the most outstanding player of Vidura without a break since 2009. She has many singles and doubles titles under her belt gained at various tournaments conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Badminton Association and different clubs and institutions. She is also a member of the national junior badminton pool.
Former president of the cricket association, Dr. Upali Mahanama graced the occasion as the chief guest. The ceremony was organized by D.G. Sumanasekara, the principal while the sports coordinator, Upali de Silva and the sports division of Vidura College played a pivotal role in getting things in place.
