Alison Skilbeck’s hilarious and heart-breaking one woman show, Are There More of You?, directed by Jeremy Stockwell will be performed in Colombo, at the British Council hall on January 13. The performances are presented in partnership with the Sunera Foundation.
Critically acclaimed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with five star reviews, and with a residency at the King’s Head Theatre that prompted former Times chief critic, Irving Wardle to compare the performance to that of the great Ruth Draper, Are There More of You?, is the tale of four women living seemingly different lives all on the verge of a nervous breakthrough, linked by the same postcode, SW11!
First there is Claire, bright, abandoned ambassador’s wife, with blood on her hands: Italian Sophia, serving egg ‘n’ chips by day and osso bucco and Verdi by night, while upstairs Mamma seems set to last for ever, Sara the local spirit weaver, all sweetness and light, unless you tangle with her, and Sam, bluff northern businesswoman, who’s always got on with men, but seems to be going home alone.
The reviewers loved it. “Brilliantly observed, richly comic characters, all played to painful perfection” wrote Alan Ayckbourn, while Alan Plater described it as “A lovely piece of work: four diverse, original characters, telling their highly original stories. Funny, painful and surreal – very like life.”
Alison Skilbeck has played a wide variety of roles in theatre, television, film and radio, including The Archers, Midsomer Murders, Miss Marple, Soldier Soldier, Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, Law and Order:UK, and has created roles in no fewer than six Alan Ayckbourn premieres.
She has directed throughout her career, and is now most closely associated with RADA, where she is an Associate Teacher specialising in Shakespeare: she has just directed 2nd year students in Pericles.
Director Jeremy Stockwell has directed for the National Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre, and the Edinburgh Festival. He works extensively all over Europe and has recently directed Shakespeare for the New National Theatre, Tokyo.
He specialises in devising physical theatre and was commissioned to make a piece about Edgar Allen Poe for the Freiburg Festival. He is a regular Acting Coach on television; recent credits include ‘How do you solve a problem like Maria?’ and the BBC series ‘The Speaker’.
Tickets priced at Rs 1000 will be available from January 3, at the British Council’s Help Desk .
