Message from the Vice Chancellor Professor Kshanika Hirimburegama

Award Ceremony of the Diploma in Travel and Tourism Economics and Hotel Management (DTTEHM) Program of the University of Colombo. I have great pleasure in issuing this brief message to mark the occasion of the Award Ceremony of the Diploma in Travel and Tourism Economics and Hotel Management (DTTEHM) Program of the University of Colombo.

The University of Colombo is the premier and a world renowned University in Sri Lanka. In addition to providing undergraduate education for about 10,000 students, the University also provides postgraduate education & Certificate Courses for another 25,000. During the past few years, the university has embarked on producing knowledge workforce for the Sri Lankan and global economy.
The Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diplomas leading to a degree in various fields provide skill development and capacity building of human resources at all levels.

After 30 years, the Sri Lankans are now able to develop the country to regain the position once we enjoyed in Asia. Knowledge based tourism together with our historical and cultural background; Sri Lanka no doubt will be one of the most attractive locations for global tourism. Realizing this potential University of Colombo has embarked on introducing courses at Diploma & Certificate level, to develop human recourses in the fields directing & indirectly related to tourism.

I am happy that Dr D.A.C. Suranga Silva has linked the University of Colombo with the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) and has introduced this very important Course DTTEHM to produce knowledgeable human resources. I understand (DTTEHM) is a multi-disciplinary Diploma level program and is specially designed to respond to the increasing demand for multi-skilled travel and tourism professionals.  It is oriented to meet the present and future challenges of global trends in the travel and tourism industry.

With the Leadership of HE President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Minister Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, the local tourism industry could prosper to its maximum. It is the duty of the academics, the educated people, to provide the knowledge in appropriate areas unique to Mother Lanka and direct the country towards national development.

I wish the Diploma recipients every success in their future endeavours and I am sure that they will contribute to the best in the accelerated development programs of Mother Lanka.
