Dutch traditions continue at The Wagon Wheel

By Sanath Weerasuriya

The Wagon Wheel Country Club formally known as Alcatras Restaurant in Dehiwela has done it again.
Wagon Wheel Country Club is now serving up delicious, authentic and Dutch-influenced Sri Lankan dish lamprais in Sawans.  Sawans have traditionally been for Buriyani, and lamprais have always been sold in individual packs, with more often than less, small portions.  But, lamprais lovers definitely see and flavour the difference from the scrumptious Lamprais Sawan now being served by the Wagon Wheel Country Club.

The Club is located at 1, Hill House Gardens, Dehiwela, and was previously known as the very popular Alcatras Restaurant.  The Restaurant has been refurbished and rebranded and now boasts of a well stocked Garden Pub, a classic dining restaurant, and takeouts ranging from spicy Sri Lankan Rice & Curry packs to its signature styled Chinese dishes, a special Christmas Menu, and now, the very popular Lamprais.

The Lamprais Sawan amply serves a hungry seven adults, and is included with a large roast chicken and chocolate marshmallow dessert. Need we say more?  Just order it.

The Wagon Wheel Country Club’ and ‘Malky’s Fine Dining’s well poised to build its reputation on providing guests with food that is outstanding: ambitious, and beautifully presented amidst a captivating ambience.

Our guests will see our commitment to providing a dining experience they will want to have time and time-again with wonderful food and excellent service, in an outstanding atmosphere’ said Malcolm Nanayakkara, the Director of the property.

‘The restaurant industry is truly a one-to-one business in which the front line people servers, hostesses, and bartenders, clearly make a difference in the success of the business .We understand the importance of a welcoming smile and friendly courteous service; and the rarity of these two elements in today’s service world’ he added

It seems The Wagon Wheel could be the perfect place to grab a quick meal before a movie or to spend an entire evening. Guests will surely feel comfortable dining casually or formally with a menu that pleases.

The Country Pub is based on the likes of a mixture of country and western on the one side and a beautiful Spanish hacienda visage on the other, and would blend, positively, to create the ideal, relaxed, mood. To those initiated in ‘pub-atmosphere’, it would be indulgence: to the uninitiated, it would be a novelty experience, and the added offer of a visit to the local pub with no embarrassment or fear of alienation, ever- present in Colombo’s high-society pubs.

Apart from the newly introduced lamprais, the Country Pub would also feature a large selection of fresh Salads, steaks, burgers and sandwich platters on its menu, and have special themed nights on a regular basis. Likes of which have never been seen in Colombo’s suburbs.

The fine dining restaurant offers an inviting atmosphere perfect for any occasion, whether it is a special celebration or a professional business meeting, with customized table settings or in separate conference rooms.

Both the indoor and outdoor table settings maintain a perfect dining atmosphere with tables set up just right to allow guests either privacy or in an informal gathering. Finally...a good restaurant with its individual style of cooking and service, where dining is not a meal, but an event...With its exquisite cuisine in a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere, it is no doubt that the restaurant will rise in popularity.
