Fuel tanks and freezer; but nothing for the fishermen

Fishermen of the Moratuwa area claim that the Moratu-Modera fishery harbour facilities and buildings provide little benefits to the fishing community.

S.Ujitha

"The fuel tanks installed for the purpose of storing fuel for fishing boats have been empty for months and fishermen have to travel to town to purchase fuel" said Moratu-Modera South Fishing Co-op chairman S.Ujitha.

According to him, the deep freezer meant to store large quantities of ice contains low-quality ice, therefore fishermen do not want to store in it the catch they bring after being many days out at sea.

"The breakwater that should be about 375-400 metres in length is only 300 metres long. The sand collected at the harbour entrance should be removed every six months, but already the area has turned into a flat sandy land," he charged.

He said fishermen out at sea cannot see the harbour due to the poor lighting system while fishing boats cannot reach an alternative fuelling area since the sandy coast stretches quite a distance.
