Prepares Students for a Variety of Careers
Today psychology offers many fields that students can specialize in. Among the areas of interest for students to build a career are organizational psychology, clinical psychology and educational psychology. These areas offer students a window into many exciting and vibrant careers which are growing in demand today.
Organizational/Industrial Psychology is an important field today as it involves understanding behaviour in the workplace. Many large organizations with a large workforce need to address issues such as work stress, work motivation, talent management, change management and a common phenomena, conflict management.
Clinical Psychology is a demanding field as students need to complete a Masters degree and when they practise; they address mental health issues in the community. This makes it attractive as a career option.
Educational Psychology is the study of the educational needs of students and educational psychologists are typically stationed in schools, pre-schools, colleges or the Ministry of Education. This is a relatively new field in Asia but a growing one as there is realization of the importance of assessing students especially when they have learning difficulties.
Apart from the above specialized careers, psychology students may instead choose to work in a variety of careers that are suited psychology degree holders.
These include:-
Training & Consulting
Human Resource Management
Advertising & Public Relations
Market Research
Social Work & Community Development
Early Childhood Education
HELP University, well-known in Asia for its Faculty of Behavioural Sciences, houses one of the largest psychology departments, with over 1,200 students both local and international. The Dean of the Faculty, Dr Goh Chee Leong is President Elect of the Asian Regional Union of Psychological Services (ARUPS) as well as the Vice President of the Malaysian Psychological Association (PSIMA). Another milestone for the Department is the joint Bachelor of Psychology Science Degree program between HELP University and Flinders University of Psychology, Australia. The joint degree which is accredited by the Australian Psychological Accreditation Council (APAC) enables students to complete a 4-year Australian psychology degree in Malaysia.
“Throughout the years, our psychology graduates are well– sought after by employers both in the government and private sector and have been employed in world class companies such as Shell, PETRONAS, Leo Burnett, AC Nielsen, Gallup, Ogilvy and Mather, the Hay Group, Accenture, Hewitt Consulting, Boston Consulting General Electric and the United Nations, to name a few added Dr Goh.
The May 2012 intake for all HELP programmes is now open. Merit- based scholarships are available.
One significant advantage studying in Malaysia, particularly at HELP University is that students have access to cost affective and affordable degrees, the total cost ranging from US $13000. The difference is, if the same degree is followed at a university in the west, the same course can cost over US$60000. Malaysia offers degrees from world renowned universities and the fact of cost effectiveness has been an attractive point for Sri Lankan students.
