‘Jazzercise’ took Colombo by storm

World’s leading dance fitness programme now in Sri Lanka
By Sanath Weerasuriya

Judi Sheppard Missett, who turned her love of jazz dance into a worldwide dance exercise phenomenon, founded the Jazzercise dance fitness programme in 1969. The workout programme, which offers a fusion of jazz dance, kickboxing, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, and various cardio movements, has positively affected millions of people worldwide. Benefits include increased cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility, as well as an overall “feel good” factor.

Jazzercise, the world’s leading dance fitness programme, posted its highest-ever ranking on Entrepreneur Magazine’s 2011 Franchise 500 list. The international group fitness programme ranks 17th overall and first in the fitness business category. The international franchise business hosts a network of 7,800 instructors teaching more than 32,000 classes weekly in 32 countries.

This renowned international franchise has now been brought to Sri Lanka by Nishelli Perera who recently returned to Sri Lanka after eight years in the U.S. As a Jazzercise franchise owner and instructor, Nishelli Perera has participated in an intensive screening process, a training and certification programme, and is CPR certified. She also continues her education in all aspects of dance and physiology to keep abreast of the latest developments in fitness.

With a Masters degree in Economic Research, Nishelli is a Research Analyst and lecturer by profession, but dance and fitness is her passion and this is evident by the sparkle in her eye and enthusiasm on her face when she conducts classes.

Classes are held at the Western Province Aesthetic Center (next to Royal College Sports Complex) on Stanley Wijesundara Mawatha, Colombo 7. For more information about Jazzercise of Colombo, visit www.facebook.com/jazzercise.lk
