While the number of new vehicles in Sri Lanka rose by 31.6% in 2011 to 525,421 from 359,243 in 2010, the Motor Traffic Department also doubled revenue to Rs 8.3 billion last year. According to official data, revenue in 2010 was Rs. 4.2 billion. The Department collected this money from 'luxury' and 'semi-luxury' taxes and sales through the register and transfer of vehicles and from other levies.
Commissioner General of Motor Traffic B.D.L Dharmapriya said the department continues to increase its' revenue with the revenue collection system being streamlined for the convenience of all motorists. The new system avoids unnecessary delay in handling payments of revenue licenses. He said as a major revenue collector of the state, the department remits all the money to the Treasury. The department plans to set up five more branches with online service facilities in Puttalam, Vavuniya, Kegalle, Kalutara and Batticaloa dstricts under the plan to decentralize its services with government funding.
