Two men have disappeared after being caught siphoning off fuel from a bowser that had called at a Petroleum Corporation filling station in Kalpitiya. The men are the bowser driver and his assistant. They had used a plastic tube to draw out kerosene and diesel being pumped into the bowser. The fuel is for the fleet of power-driven fishing boats in Kalpitiya harbour.
Every two days, bowsers from Muthurajawela call at the Kalpitiya harbour. On March 1, at 11.49 pm, a bowser arrived at the harbour, said W. M. Harris, officer in charge of the filling station. The detection was made while 13,200 litres of fuel were being pumped into the bowser.
The Kalpitiya Police are investigating.
