Police are yet to make a breakthrough in their investigations into the shooting at the Galle Sangamiththa College principal’s residence last Saturday. Police media spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said that a special investigation was being conducted.A gunman opened fire at the principal’s residence in Uluwitike, Poddala, when she was at home with her husband and son.

Police said six shots from a T.56 rifle had been fired at the main door of the residence. However, no injuries were caused to the residents.
Police also found a couple of posters at the entrance to the house, berating the principal for corrupt practices.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, the Principal Sarasvathi Dahanayake, said she had been threatened by some people for not admitting their children to the school, adding that she had received several intimidating telephone calls but she never expected something like this would happen to her.
“I heard a big sound around 10 p.m. but didn’t realize it was gunfire. But suddenly the house was filled with smoke. My son told me not to open the door as it was gunfire. A couple of minutes later, I heard a motorcycle riding off,” Mrs. Dahanayake said.
An official from the Matara District Education Department said that the department had not probed the principal as there had been no complaints. |
