Damian Wickramatilleke, one of the members from the original line up of Purple Rain has cut short a stint in the UK to fly back and join his fellow band members when they take to the stage on the 18th of March at the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Colombo.
He says he is quite looking forward to the reunion, and recreating the old days once again. Listening to the boys rehearsing this week at the Gypsies studio in Ratmalana it is quite difficult to believe that the band was ever apart. Slipping into the numbers that brought them instant fame with effortless ease.
The box plan that opened on Thursday at the events desk of the Hilton Colombo saw the VIP seat snapped up on the same day itself.
‘Purple Rain’ was one of the biggest names in the Sri Lankan music scene during the era of late 80’s and 90’s under the leadership of veteran Geoffrey Fernando.
The legend of Purple Rain was born in the heydays of Sri Lankan pop, led by the charismatic Geoff and comprising a line up of some of the hottest names in the field of western music.
This rare journey down a musical memory lane is a once in lifetime opportunity for all those who remember the heady nights of the Peacock and the music that lives on to this day.
The reunion concert and the 25th anniversary of legendry ‘Purple Rain’ will come alive on Sunday,18th March from 7.00pm to solid three hours of live music.
This is billed as a one night only concert for Colombo, with a UK and Australian tour on the cards for later on this year.
Along with Purple Rain, the Concert will feature Russell Fernando of ‘Pro Arrangements’ fame, Gehan Fernando, Rajitha Fernando, Corrine de Almeida, Noeline Honter, Umara and Umariya.
The music for the artistes will be provided by Mirage, another top name in the music scene.
The lineup of the band Purple Rain for the night consists of some of the original members – Geoff, Derek Wickremanayake, Michael(Lal) de Silva, Damian Wickramatilleke, Kevin de Almeida, Sudu Goonesekera and Diren Sabaratnam. |
