Ratnam who were League Champions were no match for the Sailors. This was evident when Navy banged in the first goal through Malik Migara. The second was by R.M.J. Dhammika in the eighth minute. The third goal was booted in the 39th minute through the boot of E.A.C. Sanjeeva. The fourth goal was netted in by N.H. D.P.K. Perera in the 65th minute.

The solitary goal for Ratnams was scored by E.B. Channa in the 8oth minute. During the game four yellow cards were shown to Ratnam and one to Navy. This was the first time that Navy bagged this prestigious trophy while Ratnam had won this trophy on three previous occasions.

A thunder storm threatened to disrupt the game but when lemons were taken the clouds moved on and left the field dry and sunny enabling the Sailors to continue their onslaught on Ratnam. On their way to the final Navy beat league runners-up Army and in the final overcame former champs Ratnam.
