In the last few months, 69 persons in the Nuwara Eliya district were detected illicitly tapping electricity from the main line, and were fined a total of Rs 4,177,129 by the investigating officer of Uva, P.M. Premaratne and his team.
The areas included Lindula, Rikillagaskada, Walapone and Thawalantenna.
The special investigation team carried out the raids on March 24, 25 and 26 and the power pirates produced before the Kandy, Gampola and Nuwara Eliya magistrates.
Seven of the ‘pirates’ were fined over a lakh each, three from Walapone and four from Nuwara Eliya. The raids were conducted on the orders of engineer D.C. Jayaratne. |
