Changes in Student Visa Procedure for Malaysia

With vast experience of being in the Sri Lankan overseas student placement service for 12 years International Scholar Educational Services (ISES) is very knowledgeable of Sri Lankan student’s higher education dreams. With the intention of ensuring a more focused service to students “ Malaysian Education Centre @ International Scholar ” has been established in partnership with Winning Magnitude in Malaysia.

Malaysia would be the best alternative for these students when all factors of studying overseas such as the cost, culture, weather and the flexibility in choosing majors are considered. The cost of studying in countries like UK, Australia, New Zealand and USA would be more than double the cost of studying in Malaysia. Students can obtain degrees from world renowned universities through their own branch campuses in Malaysia. Another advantage of studying in Malaysia is the ease of travelling between Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

Obtaining a student visa for Malaysia is less complicated compared to the student visa procedures of other popular study destinations. However recent changes in visa procedures are an issue with time taken for visa approvals..

Normally students have to wait nearly 6-8 weeks for the Student Visa Approval Letter from Immigration Malaysia (IMM) Putrajaya (HQ). Student Visa Approval Letter is compulsory for a Sri Lankan Student to apply for the visa from Malaysian High Commission in Sri Lanka. August and September are the main intake periods of many British and Australian Universities which have their branch campuses in Malaysia. For the Students who are expecting G.C.E Advanced Level results mid August, will find it difficult to obtain visa approval for the same year August September intakes.

The procedure earlier was for the students to obtain a tourist visa which usually is issued for a period of one month. Once they arrive in Malaysia and enrol in their chosen institute the social visa will be converted to student visa by the institute authorities.

As of now all the universities have informed us that IMM Putrajaya (HQ) will no longer issue Special Passes to extend the Social Pass while waiting for the Student Pass approval. That means they can no longer help to extend Social Pass for students while the Student Pass is being processed. Therefore those students expecting their results in mid August and intend to enrol for the August / September intakes of the same year are advised to apply with pending results at least 2 months prior to the enrolment dates. This action will help avoid last minute problems caused by visa issues.
Once the student gets the results a decision can be made whether they wish to proceed with application or not. This timely action will help minimise delays in achieving a student’s future career ambitions.
