Eyeing for slots at the London Olympics

Three women pugilists for World Boxing Championship

The Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka has selected three women pugilists to compete in the forthcoming Women’s World Boxing Championship which is scheduled to be held from May 9 to 20 in Qinhauangdao, China.

Anusha Kodituwakku

Sri Lanka will be represented by Anusha Kodituwakku, Nilimini Jayasinghe and Shiromali Weeraratne who will be contesting in the 51kgs, 60kgs and 75kgs categories respectively with the aim of clinching a slot to participate at the London Olympics.

The championship organized by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) will see female pugilists contesting in the age groups of between 17-34 and in the weight categories from 45kgs (Flyweight) to 81+kgs (Super Heavyweight).

Shiromali Weerarathna

This will be the seventh in the series which first conducted by the AIBA in 2001 in USA and this was also serve as a qualifying tournament to secure a slot at the forthcoming London Olympics due to be held in August this year.

Nilmini Jayasinghe

The championship will see 24 quotas up for grabs comprising of eight in each category for the London Olympic and competition is going to stiff with world class boxers from many countries expected to vie for honours to participate for the first time in the sport of boxing for women.

The Sri Lanka contingent will be accompanied by Anuruddha Ratnayake as the coach a former boxer who participated at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Pujith Mendis who had coached Shiromali to secure a bronze medal at the recently concluded Asian Women’s Boxing Championship held in India. Treasurer of the ABA Ruwan Keragala will accompany the team as the manager.

Prior to the World Championship the contingent left the island for a practice session to Thailand where they will train with the Thai national boxers and then fly over to China for the World Championships.
