100 years of selfless service for the deaf and blind

The Ceylon School for the Blind which comprises three schools, namely the School for the Blind and the School for the Deaf Ratmalana, and Nuffield School for the Deaf and Blind Kaithady Jaffna, celebrates 100 years of selfless service to the deaf and blind this year.

The School for the Deaf and Blind was started as one school, by Mary Chapman, a missionary of the Church of England Zenana Missionary Society (CEZMS).

The centenary celebrations of this school that now comprises three schools will be held on June 17, Founder’s Day, at the school’s premises in Ratmalana starting with a Service of Thanksgiving at 8 a.m. where the Bishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Dhiloraj Canagasabey will be the celebrant and preacher, followed by the issue of a special commemoration stamp and an educational arts and crafts exhibition by the students.

‘A Celebration through Light’, an exhibition by the January 2012 batch of the Photographic Society of Sri Lanka will be held on June 16 and 17 at the Lionel Wendt Gallery.

Dr. P.R. Anthonis Memorial Oration

Professor Kusuma Karunaratne will deliver the Deshamanya Dr. P.R. Anthonis Memorial Oration - 2012, organized by the JICA Alumni Association of Sri Lanka at 7.00 p.m. on June 16 at the auditorium of the Sasakawa Memorial Cultural Centre, 22nd Lane, Colombo 3 on the theme “Role of the Creative Writer in the Development of Social Values”.

Social welfare programme

A social welfare programme organized by the Channa Wickum Foundation was held at the Sri Sunandarama Temple in Kalubowila on June 2.

Most outstanding Lions President

Senerath Dematapitiya of Lions Club of Maharagama was adjudged the most outstanding Lions President at the Lions District Convention held recently. Lions Club of Maharagama Central was adjudged the best Lions Club of the District.

Tagore scholar to discuss his short stories in English

Tagore scholar Prof. Radha Chakravarty will deliver a lecture on “Tagore’s Short Stories in English” on June 11 at 12 noon at the Department of English of the University of Colombo. The lecture is organized by the Indian Cultural Centre in association with the Centre for Contemporary Indian Studies and the Department of English, University of Colombo.

Her second lecture will be on “Representations of the body in stories by South Asian Women” on June 13 at 4 p.m. at the Seminar Room, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya.

2nd book by Ranjith Perera

J.F. Ranjith Perera, author of the book ‘Winning an Unwinnable War, a Tribute to the War Heroes’ presented his second book written in Sinhala titled, Prabhakaran Eelam sihinaya sunu visunu kala ranaviruwo to Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development. This book deals with the selfess contributions made by the Security Forces (Ranaviruvos) to eradicate terrorism from our country.

Books for prisoners' children

Free books were distributed to prisoners’ children at the Welikada female prisoners’ section recently. Western Provincial Councillor and founder of Pragna Pradeepa Sankalpaya movement Jayantha de Silva is seen handing over a parcel of books to one of the teachers as prison officers look on.
