Penultimate ball victory ends 53 year wait
By Shane Seneviratne

In a breathtaking cliffhanger in the hills, Trinty turned tables on Royal to win by one wicket with one ball to spare in their inter school cricket match at Asgiriya yesterday. This win by the Kandy school broke a 53 year old hoodoo.

Royal batting a second time with a lead of 104runs, made 111 for 3. They reached the score mainly due to useful knocks from Jehan Mubark (61) and Shanaka Perera (30). Jehan's 61 helped him to complete twin half centuries in the match Kaushalya Weeraratne (2 for 20) bowled well for Trinity.

Royal's declaration gave Trinity a target of 216 runs to win in 40 overs. Trinity romped home in a nail biting finish.Their victory came due to match winning contributions from D. Molligoda (34), Suranga Moratot-sa (98) and Kaushalya Weeraratne (32). These three knocks helped Trinty to outsmart Royal after 53 years. Umesh Gunawardena (3 for 27), Harith. For Royal, Umesh Gunawardena (3 for 35) bowled well.

Asitha (45) saves St.Peter's again

By Saif Izzadeen

A stubborn unbeaten 45 by Asitha de Silva enabled St. Peter's to hang on to a draw against S.Thomas' in the inter school cricket match at Mt.Lavinia yesterday. The knock by Asitha came just four days after he showed the same determination to save St.Peter's from defeat against Ananda.

Asitha's effort which came in 169 minutes and 139 balls overshowded a fine 134 by Sri Lanka youth player and skipper of S.Thomas' Upeka Fernando.

Frayed tempers spoilt the game to a certain extent. One such incident was when Peterite Ranga Dias dashed his bat and showed his displeasure at a LBW decision given by the umpire. The other was Asitha de Silva and Naren Ratwatte being involved in an argument which had to be settled by the umpire. These two incidents left a bad taste in one's mouth. We sincerely hope that such unwarranted play will not take place in the future.

St.Peter's batting a second time around with 92 runs behind were reeling at 69 for 5, but then came a match saving 48 runs stand for the sixth wicket between Asitha de Silva (45 n.o) and Ishara Fonseka (12). This pair carried their partnership for 30 overs and this alliance saw St.Peter's drifting safely towards a draw. De Silva's innings had four well timed boundries. Nishad Peiris had bowling figures 9-8-1-2

Early in the day S.Thomas' resuming from their overnight score of 115 for 2 added another 175 runs in 29 overs with Upeka Fernando leading the way with a stylish 134 which was spiced up with 18 boundaries and two massive sixes. There were two noteworthy partnerships which helped S.Thomas'. The first was a 71 run stand between Sidath Medonza (8) and Upeka Fernando (134) then a 92 runs stand for the third wicket between Upeka Fernando and Shanka Caldera (31). These two partnerships saw S.Thomas' declaring their innings at 290 for 5 just 15 minutes before lunch. Nrimal.de.Silva (3 for 106), Malinda Warnapura (2 for 39), bowled well for St. Peter's

St Peter's - 198 and 135 for 6 in 71 overs ( A. Fonseka 11, M. Perera 19, M. Warnapura 26, I.Fonseka 12, A. de Silva 45 n.o; N. Peiris 9-8-1-2)

S.Thomas' - (115 for 2 overnight) 290 for 5 ( U. Fernando 134, J. Siriwardena 31, S. Caldera 31, N. Peiris 26, G. Fernando 35n.o, N.Ratwatte 13n.o ; N.de.Silva 3 for 106, M.Warnapura 2 for 39)

NZ wrap up Test series

New Zealand recorded their fourth successive test win on home soil with an innings and 13run victory over Zimbabwe late on the third day of the second cricket test at Eden Park yesterday.

After beating Sri Lanka twice last season, New Zealand completed back to back wins over Zimbabwe when Simon Doull tookthe final two wickets in the last over of the day.At the scheduled stumps time, Zimbabwe were 238 for eightbut New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming claimed the extra halfof play allowable if a result was deemed possible.

However, the move appeared futile when Zimbabwe's Paul

Strang and Adam Huckle picked 43 runs off the tiring New Zealand bowlers.

Doull should have made the break through when Nathan Astledropped Strang at third man.Doull had to wait two overs but he got his reward when he mclean bowled Huckle with a yorker on the third ball of the las over and then next ball had Mpumelelo Mbangwa snapped up at first slip by Fleming. Doull finished with four for 50 to give him eight wicket for the match as Zimbabwe were dismissed for 277. Strang finished 67 not out. Fleming said the win came a lot earlier than expected. "We set up the win yesterday by the way the guys batted. To score 372 runs in a day is fantastic test cricket," Fleming said.

"To lead like that after the second day made us very positive ù not about wrapping up the game today ù but having a convincing win on the third day." Zimbabwe, trailing by 290 runs on the first innings, looked likely to take the game into the fourth day when wicketkeeper-batsman Andy Flower was batting stylishly in the afternoon

Flower arrived at the crease with Zimbabwe 71 for three and that soon became 71 for four when his younger brother, Grant Flower, edged medium pacer Dion Nash low to Bryan Young at short slip. Flower watched Guy Whittall and Heath Streak fall to debatable leg before decisions but he found a worthy fighter in Strang and the pair added 71 runs in 61 minutes for the seventhwicket.

Flower was poised for his fifth test century when he was undone by the second new ball. On 83 Flower flashed at a ball from fast-medium bowler Chris Cairns and the faint edge carried through to wicketkeeper Adam Parore. Cairns finished the day with three wickets following another ,spirited display.
