Akram hat-trick puts Pakistan on topSri Lanka enters Asia Cup finalBecomes the first Pakistani to achieve this feat in Test cricketLAHORE, Pakistan, Saturday (Reuters) - An historic hat-trick by captain Wasim Akram helped put Pakistan in a commanding position against Sri Lanka at the close of the third day of their Asian test championship match on Saturday. Akram became the first Pakistani to achieve a hat-trick in Test cricket and sent Sri Lanka tumbling to 328 all out in a telling four-wicket burst off 13 balls which earned his team a useful 70-run lead. Pakistan, who made 398 in their first innings, had stretched their overall lead to 219 runs by the close, progressing to a record 149 without loss in their second innings when play was halted 18.2 overs early due to fading light. The stand between Wajahtullah Wasti and Shahid Afridi broke the previous Pakistan record for the first wicket in tests against Sri Lanka of 128 compiled by Ramiz Raja and Shoaib Muhammad in Sialkot in the 1991/92 series and Saeed Anwar and Aamir Sohail in Colombo in 1994/95. Wasti was on 61 following his fine 133 in the first innings, and Afridi, promoted to open in place of Saeed, was on 81, having being dropped four times by sloppy Sri Lankan fielding. Akram, who did not bowl at all in the morning session, mopped up the Sri Lankan innings in a remarkable display of fiery bowling to become 22nd bowler in test history to achieve the distinction. "It was truly a great honour to achieve this milestone and I am simply delighted. The last two deliveries were dead on the target which I suppose the Sri Lankan tailenders could do nothing about," said Akram, who finished with four for 30. He took the last four wickets as Sri Lanka, starting the day at 189 for four, added just 11 runs to their lunch total of 317 for six and were bowled out 30 minutes into the afternoon session. His performance outshone centuries by overnight batsmen Russel Arnold (123) and Romesh Kaluwitharana (100), who added 143 runs for the fifth wicket. Arnold, 81 overnight, reached his maiden 100 in his fifth test and Kaluwitharana's century was his third in his 26th match. Left-hander Arnold was at the wicket for 310 minutes and faced 208 balls. He struck 20 fours before off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq bowled him as he tried a sweep shot. Kaluwitharana reached his century in the second over afterlunch, having slammed 16 fours off 143 balls in a stay of 175 minutes. He was Akram's first hat-trick victim, edging a catch to Moin Khan behind the stumps in his ninth over. Akram then bowled Niroshan Bandarathilake and Pramodya Wickremasinghe to become the first Pakistani to achieve a hatrick in test cricket. He then sent Sajeeva de Silva's off-stump cartw-heeling to end the Sri Lankan innings and finished with four for 30 from 9.2 overs. Isipatana lead by 90 runs36th encounter between Isipatana and ThurstanBy Saif IzzadeenPhew! what a start for the inter-school big match season for the last year of the century. Bowlers had a field day at the 36th encounter between Isipatana and Thurstan at the P.Sara Stadium yesterday when Isipatana were bowled out for 196 in semi-darkness as play went on until 7.04 p.m However they managed to get a valuable 90 runs lead over Thurstan The Thurstan Road school were bowled out for 106, after being put into bat on a green top wicket by Isipatana skipper Krishantha Jayawardena. The P.Sara Stadium came alive as the two Thurstan openers walked out to bat to the sounds of the papare bands and flag weaving schoolboys. The two Thurstan openers Nalaka De Silva and Chamith Aravinda were only able put on 18 runs at which stage right arm pacemen Manoj Fernando had Nalaka de Silva bowled neck and crop for 11. Thurstan then lost three wickets for 11 runs including their skipper Arjuna Dayananda (9), vice captain Tarindu Wickremasinghe (0) and opener Chamith Aravinda(2) as they collapsed to 29 for 4. Thurstan couldn't recover form this shock start and were bowled out for 106. Right arm pace bowlers of Isipatana, Niluka Peiris and Manoj Fernando justified the skipper's decision to bowl first as they ran though the Thurstan's batting line up. Both bowlers shared the first six wickets of the Thurstan innings. Niluka Peiris had figuers of 3 for 34 and Manoj Fernando (3 for 33). These two bowlers were given good support by the left arm leg spinner Malinda Abeyratne who cleaned up the tail by claiming three wickets for 13 runs. Isipatana in their turn also gave a shocking batting display as they were reduced to 71 for 6 but two fruitful partnerships - first 67 for the seventh wicket between Nuwan Chamara (52) and Milinda Wickremasinghe (40) took their score to 138 for 7. Then another collapse of sorts, saw them lose nine wickets for 140. Chamara had nine fours in his half century which came in 72 balls. Then came a sizzling 56 runs partnership for the last wicket between Milinda Wickremasimghe (40) and Malinda Abeyratne (34) which took their score to 196. For Thurstan, fast bowlers Thushara Perera (4 for 41) and Mohammed Fiyaz (4 for 47) did their best to minimise the Isipatana lead to 90 runs. Isipatana are in with a chance to record a victory after 11 years. To achieve this they have to be disciplined in their bowling in the morning today. Thurstan on the other hand better look sharp.
