There has been a significant increase in Colombo tea auction offerings this week totalling 6.95 million kg. An additional volume has come from a non-closure of a catalogue during the Christmas holiday period. Demand has been good all round.
Ex-Estate offering totalled 1 million kg up from the previous week’s 0.73 million kg. The quality of offerings, particularly from the Western slopes, improved with a wider selection of teas on offer. Nuwara Eliya’s together with the Uva/Uda Pussellawa’s too had on offer select improved invoices, brokers said.
The Best Western BOP/BOPF’s gained Rs.20-40 per kg and more for select invoices following specially inquiry. In the Below Best category, select improved teas gained substantially following special inquiry, while others were firm and Rs.10-20 per kg dearer.
The High and Mid Grown CTC BP1’s had limited offerings and prices were irregular following significant qualitative variances. Low Grown varieties continued to sell well in spite of price variances.
Improved demand observed for Low Grown that comprised 2.9 million kg in the Leafy/Semi Leafy and Tippy catalogues.
In the premium catalogues, Very Tippy teas continued to attract good demand.
