Fair demand at Colombo Tea Auction

The Colombo Tea Auction this week saw some quantities receiving a fair demand like the Low Growns that amounted to 2.28 million kg on sale out of the 5.63 million kg of tea available. High and Mid Growns on sale at the auction amounted to 1.97 million kg.

In the Leafy and Semi Leafy catalogues few select best BOP1/OP1s maintained, whilst best varieties were firm following quality; others declined. Select best OP/OPAs declined substantially whilst others too were easier by a lesser extent, Teas at the lower end maintained. Select best Pekoe/Pekoe1’s were fully firm, whilst others too maintained following quality. In the Small Leaf catalogues Select best FBOPs maintained, whilst corresponding FBOPF1s declined; below best varieties were irregular and mostly easier. Teas at the lower end maintained.

In the Premium Flowery catalogues well-made tippy teas appreciated; others were fully firm. Seasonal Uva’s attracted high prices. Select best Western BOP/BOPFs were dearer upto Rs.40 on quality. Coloury below best BOP/BOPFs were firm to Rs.20 dearer; bottom irregular. Most Nuwara Eliya’s were unsold. Better Udapussellawa BOPs were lower Rs.20 and more and the BOPFs were firm to Rs.20 dearer. Seasonal Uva BOP/BOPFs make substantial gains on special inquiry; other BOP/BOPFs were firm to slightly dearer. Select Medium BOP/BOPFs were firm; others were irregularly lower. CTC BP1s were firm on last. PF1s were firm to Rs.20 dearer for well-made sorts. (SD)
