By Timothy A. Edward
Leadership has always been the force that shapes nations, communities, and even the destiny of our world. Today, as in centuries past, we see how a handful of leaders dominate global affairs, influencing not only the present but also the future. The weight of leadership is immense, and its impact undeniable.
What Do Leaders Really Do?
Leaders are visionaries. They cast vision and mission, mobilise followers, and inspire communities - even entire countries - to embrace strategies that achieve organisational or territorial goals. Leadership is not merely about holding a position; it is about guiding people toward a shared purpose.
Good Leaders vs. Bad Leaders
History and the present show us two kinds of leaders. On one side, we find servant leaders who inspire, uplift, and empower. On the other, we encounter tyrants who dominate, control, and enslave. Authoritarian leadership produces fear, not freedom.
So how do we distinguish good leadership from bad? The answer lies in the value their leadership brings. True leadership is earned, not given. We must ask: Do new leaders emerge under their guidance? Does their lifestyle inspire excellence in others? Does their leadership bring freedom and dignity, or fear and control? What influence do they have on society? Have they built networks and movements that uphold the rule of law and work for the welfare of all?
A Call for Reflection in 2026
We have just completed the first week of 2026. With 51 weeks ahead, this is the perfect time to commit ourselves to learning more about leadership skills, competencies, and attitudes. Righteous leadership has the power to stabilise nations, bring lasting peace, and transform countries into blessings for others.
Invitation to Participate
To deepen this understanding, the writer has prepared a Research Questionnaire and invites readers to share their insights on leadership skills and competencies. Your input will remain confidential and will be used for academic and erudite purposes. By contributing, you help build a collective wisdom that benefits all.
The Purpose of the Research
The goal is to develop leadership topics and modules that equip leaders - whether in business or everyday life - to grow, strategize, and align their organisations with vision and mission. As the saying goes: “Without wise leadership, a nation is in trouble; but with good counsellors there is safety”.
Leadership is not about titles or positions - it is about influence, vision, and service. As we journey through 2026, let us strive to cultivate leaders who inspire excellence, uphold justice, and bring freedom. With wise and righteous leadership, our nations can rise to levels of peace and prosperity yet to be experienced, becoming a blessing to the world.
