Feature - Leadership and Trust

Business

By Timothy A. Edward

Every great leader stands on a foundation, and at the very heart of that foundation lies trust. Without trust, leadership is fragile, relationships are shallow, and progress is short-lived. Think of the people you trust most - what qualities come to mind? Integrity, consistency, humility, promises kept. Trust is not built overnight, nor is it built by charisma. It is earned slowly, through character proven over time.

Leadership Styles

We all have different temperaments and personalities, and our leadership styles often reflect them. Some leaders are dominating and forceful, others embrace situational leadership, some are democratic, a few autocratic, and others servant leaders. These diverse styles are needed to move our world forward - and the business world is no exception.

What Followers Expect

Regardless of style, followers expect certain qualities from their leaders. They expect to be treated as people, not as fuel. They expect truth told early, confidentiality honoured, and conflict handled with maturity. They watch closely to see if leaders are the same in public and private, in victory and in pressure, with the powerful and with the marginalised.

Communication and Trust

In communication, nothing kills trust like delayed honesty. Big promises may impress, but kept promises build trust. Wise leaders learn to share wins as “we” and take losses as “me”.

Women Leaders in Everyday Life

Closer to home, we are blessed with remarkable women leaders - grandmothers, mothers, aunts, teachers, sisters, wives, daughters, colleagues, and friends. They embody the qualities of trust and leadership in daily life. As we celebrate International Women’s Day this week, it is fitting to honour these women in the truest spirit. Where would we be without them?

Trust Beyond Leadership

Trust is a heart issue, but no leadership can last long without it. Without trust, relationships break, businesses falter, and nations stumble. For example, in Sri Lanka about 300 - 400 divorce cases are filed every day.  Ancient wisdom reminds us: “He who finds a wife finds favour from the Lord, and the heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.”

Trust is more than a leadership trait - it is the glue that holds families, organisations, and nations together. Like ancient trees that grow tall with roots that reach deep, trust is strong, steady, and enduring. Without it, society fractures; with it, people flourish. Leadership without trust is a shadow, but leadership with trust becomes a beautiful garden that inspires the heart and a light that guides others forward. If we desire lasting influence, we must build trust with integrity, consistency, and care. In the end, true leadership is not measured by titles or charisma, but by the trust we plant, the roots we nurture, and the lives we help grow tall and strong.
