We ‘manage’ to get things done, but we ‘lead’ to bringing out the greatness in others. In a real sense, we are all leaders. First and foremost, we need to lead ourselves, our lives and then lead our communities, companies and the nation. 

In this, the ability to network plays a key role. If we work in silos, we will have limited impact. But, if we network carefully, our work and mission will continue. It may go through some changes and transformations. Yet, in its essence and elements, it will remain the same, for in a real sense, there is nothing new under the sun. 

In life, what matters is relationships. We enter this world empty-handed. When we leave, we also leave empty-handed. What we take with us are only memories and relationships. In between, it is all about iron sharpening iron, and one person sharpening the wits of another.

However, the concept of 'networking' for personal gain will have only a limited impact. Base your networking on values such as love, trust, and mutual respect, rather than self-interest or manipulation. The importance of forming strong relationships, building trust, and leveraging those connections for the greater good cannot be overemphasised. In that context, below are some reasons and forms of networking. It is not an exhaustive list, but trust it will be thought-provoking to move us into some impactful networking.

Network to Raise Leaders

Have a cautious approach to networking. If we network with the wrong people, then we will live to tell a sorry tale. Network with the right people to raise leaders to continue with your mission. Life is such. Today we are here and tomorrow we might be gone like a thin vapour of the air. Life is short and we need to act fast. Don’t waste time. Train people to become leaders. 

The Power of Reciprocity

Give before you receive. Build relationships by genuinely helping others, without expecting immediate returns. Encourage businesses to establish partnerships and support entrepreneurs through mentorship, funding, and knowledge sharing.

Showing hospitality to others can be an important aspect of networking. By extending hospitality to others, one can build relationships and create opportunities for mutual benefit.

Create a Business Ecosystem

Foster a supportive environment where businesses collaborate, innovate, and grow together. Establish industry clusters, incubators, and accelerators to connect businesses, share resources, and drive economic development.

Focus on Value Creation

Identify and address the unique needs of potential customers, creating products and services that deliver exceptional value. Encourage businesses to develop innovative solutions that address local market challenges, such as affordable healthcare, sustainable agriculture, and clean energy.

Leverage Diaspora Connections 

Engage with Sri Lankan diaspora communities to access their knowledge, networks, and financial resources. Establish formal mechanisms to connect businesses with diaspora professionals, arrange periodic conferences and workshops, and provide incentives for diaspora investment.

Environmental Collaboration

Network and promote international agreements and initiatives to combat climate change and protect biodiversity. Share best practices and technologies with other countries on sustainable development, waste management, and renewable energy. Establish joint research programmes to study environmental challenges and develop solutions.
