January tea sales average crossed Rs.700 per kg mark for the first time in history recording Rs.704.6, Forbes and Walker report stated.
The last time a highest ever recorded average in a calendar month was at Rs.697.57 during the COVID-19 impacted May 2020.In comparison to the January 2021 average of Rs.645.02 it shows a significant increase of Rs.59.65 YOY, the report stated.
The week’s auction offerings for Ceylon Tea were marginally lower and totalled 6.6 million kg. The steep increase in prices in January saw a correction this week. Ex-Estate offerings totaled 0.96 million kg.
Best Western’s continued to sell well, while teas in the Below Best and Plainer categories witnessed a correction with prices declining Rs.20-30 per kg. Uda Pussellawa declined Rs.20-30 per kg and Rs.10-20 per kg respectively for the BOP/BOPF’s.
CTC teas witnessed much less demand, the report stated adding that most teas on offer declined by Rs.30 per kg and more.
Low Growns comprised 2.7 million kg in the Leafy/Semi Leafy and Tippy catalogues. There was fair demand.
In the Premium catalogues, Very Tippy teas continued to attract good demand. Best together with Below Best were firm to easier, whilst the balance was lower following quality. (SD)
