This week’s Colombo Tea Auction saw 4.16 million kg of tea on offer with 1.83 million kg being Low Grown Main Grades and 1.74 million kg were High and Mid Grown Main Grades.
In the Leafy and Semi Leafy catalogues select best BOP1/OP1s were barely steady, whilst improved below best OP1s maintained; corresponding BOP1s gained; others and poorer sorts were fully firm. Well-made OP/OPAs in general gained, whilst others and poorer sorts maintained. Select best Pekoe’s were fully firm, whilst corresponding Pekoe1’s declined. Improved below best varieties were fully firm to selectively dearer, whilst poorer sorts maintained.
In the Small leaf catalogues select best FBOP/FBOPF1s were fully firm, whilst improved below best varieties gained following quality.
Teas at the lower end met with improved demand. In the Premium Flowery catalogues all teas gained substantially.
There was fair general demand in the Ex-Estate catalogues. Select best Western BOPs were irregular and mostly easier. Best/Below clean leaf types appreciated Rs.20; poorer sorts firm to dearer to a lesser extent. Select best Western BOPFs ease Rs.20 to Rs.40. Best/below best types were dearer Rs.20; others too appreciated in the value following quality.
Nuwara Eliya BOP /BOPFs mostly remained unsold due to lack of bids. Uva/Udapussellawa BOPs were barely steady. Clean leaf Udapussellawa BOPFs gained in value, whilst Uva BOPFs too were dearer following quality. Best Medium BOP/BOPFs continued to sell well; others were firm on last Best CTC PF1s were irregular and tended easier. (SD)
