November brews better times for Ceylon tea

Business

The impact of improved fertiliser application and better weather conditions has increased November tea production to 20.2 million kg from 18.7 million kg in October this year, Asia Siyaka Market report stated this week. In November last year the crop was 20.06 million kg.

Sri Lanka has lost 47 million kg for the period January – November with production dropping to 231.8 million kg, the lowest since 1992 when an El-Nino drought severely impacted production.

This week there were 5.11 million kg of tea on offer at the Colombo Tea Auction with 2.25 million kg being Low Grown Main Grades and 1.72 million kg High and Mid Grown Main Grades.

Low Growns met with fair demand. In the Leafy Grade catalogues Select best and best OP1s were substantially dearer; others were fully firm. OPS appreciated in value all-round. OPAs – except for a few poorer teas; all others met with good demand and sold at dearer rates (SD)
