An Indian passenger arriving from Kuwait was arrested at Katunayake Airport for carrying live ammunition concealed in his luggage.
The 30-year-old man, a resident of Tamil Nadu, India, works as a cleaner in Kuwait.
He arrived at Katunayake Airport on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-230 at 6:30 AM on June 21,today. He intended to board another flight, Sri Lankan Airlines flight UL-121, departing for Chennai, India, at 8:00 AM the same day.
During a security scan conducted by airport officers, live ammunition for T-56 rifles was discovered hidden in a small box within his luggage. The Airport Police were notified, and a team of officers subsequently arrested the passenger.
The man told the police that he received the live ammunition while cleaning an open field in Kuwait.
Further investigations are being conducted by Police Constables 38226 Dissanayake and 102314 Wickramasinghe, under the supervision of the Officer in Charge of Katunayake Airport Police, Elmo Malcolm Pate.
The passenger and the live ammunition are expected to be presented before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on June 21.
