Swiss Foundation donates Angiography Machine to Karapitiya Hospital

In a landmark moment for Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector, the Teaching Hospital, Karapitiya, has received a state-of-the-art Philips Azurion 3M12 angiography machine, donated by the Herz Clinic Foundation of  Zurich, Switzerland.

This high-value medical system marks one of the most significant international contributions to cardiac care in the country in recent
years.

The donation was coordinated through the local agent together with Technomedics International, Battaramulla, which managed the complex clearance and handling of the nearly five-tonne air-freight shipment that arrived in Colombo last week.

Dr. Udesh Ranga, Director, Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, noted that the need for advanced cardiovascular treatment facilities in the region has become critical. “In Sri Lanka, the burden of cardiovascular diseases is extremely high. As the only state hospital in the Southern Province offering these services, we face long waiting lists, and our current angiography machine can no longer meet the demand,” Dr. Ranga said.

“Patients from Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces also depend on us. The installation of this new unit will significantly reduce the backlog and, more importantly, save lives.”

Angiography systems such as the Philips Azurion 3M12 use advanced X-ray imaging and contrast agents to visualize blood vessels, enabling accurate diagnosis and timely treatment of heart and vascular conditions.

The initiative was spearheaded by Swiss citizens Rudolf Albert Gauhl and Hui Min Dias Bandaranayake through the Herz Clinic Foundation, Zurich. They emphasized that the donation would double treatment capacity at Karapitiya.

The official handover ceremony is scheduled for the end of November, with Prof. Juerg Gruenenfelder, Prof. Christophe Wyss, and Prof. Patric Biaggi representing the Herz Clinic Foundation.
