Volumes surge at Ceylon tea auction

This week’s Colombo Tea auction saw 5.77 million kg of tea on offer with 2.44 million kg of Low Grown Main Grades and 2.06 million kg of High and Mid Grown Main Grades, the Asia Siyaka stated in its market report.

In the Leafy and Semi Leafy catalogues Select Best BOP1/OP1s were barely steady, whilst best OP1s declined, however corresponding BOP1s maintained.

In the Small Leaf catalogues Select best FBOP/FBOPF1s maintained, whilst best/improved below best varieties gained; others and poorer sorts too met with improved demand. In the Premium Flowery catalogues leafy varieties met with improved demand and smaller varieties maintained.

There was improved demand at this week’s Ex-Estate auction. Selected Western BOPs gained upto Rs.50; others maintained. The better Medium BOPFs gained Rs.20 to Rs.40 and more for coloury sorts and bottom upto Rs.50 dearer. Nuwara Eliya BOPs continued irregular, but the BOFs were firm. Seasonal Uva BOP /BOPFs continued to attract special inquiry; others were dearer upto Rs.100 and more. (SD)
