Political impasse paralyses Sri Lanka’s state machinery

Business

Work at most of Sri Lanka’s public sector instructions including ministries has come to a standstill as a result of the political impasse over the formation of a new government after last week’s local government elections.

The entire state machinery including the Treasury is operating at a snail’s pace as many officials adopt a wait and see attitude in exercising their official functions, an Independent check made by Sunday TimesOnline revealed.

The current uncertain political situation has also paralysed the work at provincial councils and local government institutions with rumourmongers and social media actively engaged in speculating about new developments in the coalition government and the opposition MPs’ crossovers.

Treasury operations and cash flow meetings could be affected due to this uncertain attitude, a senior official who wished to remain anonymous said.

In some areas garbage collection has not been properly done with local government workers still in disarray, as the new administration is yet to take over the reins, officials said. (Bandula)
