Russia is lifting the suspension on Sri Lankan tea from December 30, Sri Lankan authorities in Colombo said on Monday.
This follows talks between a Sri Lankan delegation and Russian officials in Moscow on Monday.
The sources said President Maithripala Sirisena’s appeal, in a letter, to Russian President Vladimir Putin also helped in the process. The Sri Lankan delegation included Tea Board Chairman Rohan Pethiyagoda.
The temporary ban was imposed by Russia from December 18 after a Khapra Beetle was found in a consignment of tea from Sri Lanka. Following this Russia placed temporary restrictions on all agricultural product imports from Sri Lanka.
Russia is one of Sri Lanka's biggest tea buyers and its absence or restricted buying at the Colombo auction normally has a negative impact on prices. The Colombo auction is on holiday this week and resumes on January 2. - ENDS -
