The Sri Lanka Banks Association on Friday provided more clarity on the 15 per cent special interest rate to deposits for senior citizens which has stirred anger and frustration.
In a newspaper advertisement, new sections – not included in an earlier notice – said that the new account of upto Rs. 1 million could be opened as a joint account with other senior citizen.
It also stated that those who had opened FDs of Rs. 1 million and below under the earlier 12 per cent interest rate can convert this to a fresh account at the new 15 per cent rate without incurring any penalty.
The 15 per cent budget proposal has seen confusion and chaos in its implementation with senior citizens calling the Business Times and making complaints of a scheme which they say is unfair, unjust and ‘downright cheating’. – ENDS -
