Amidst reports that the Government has accepted the resignation of the SriLankan Airlines Board of Directors, speculation was rife that airline chairman Ajit Dias was stepping down from tomorrow (Friday).
Mr. Dias was not immediately available for comment. Airline staff said he and the CEO Suren Ratwatte addressed the staff on Tuesday January 2 at a customary New Year meeting where Mr. Dias had hinted that he was stepping down.
However another board director, who has also offered to resign, said the directors have not received any intimation from the Prime Minister’s Office as to whether the resignations have been accepted. All the directors, barring one, sent in their resignations some weeks ago to enable the Government to restructure the airline.
The airline which has barely managed to stay afloat has been struggling with accumulated losses from management issues by the previous regime, and a massive compensation payment owing to a decision to cancel new Airbus orders. –ENDS -
