Environment proposals in budget 2023
A proposal to allocate Rs. 100 million to establish an International University for climate change for the purpose of furthering knowledge, sharing experience education, training building capacities, development of programs in the areas of climate change mitigation was presented in the budget proposals this week..
“The effects of global climate change are real and complex. Sri Lanka should also contribute to the program for the common survival of humanity by helping to mitigate the effects of climate change”President Ranil Wickremesinghe explained.
A joint venture project at a suitable location in the Puttalam-Mannar coastal region to produce green hydrogen (using water with solar power or wind power) was also suggested.
“Since the world's use of fossil fuels as a form of energy is costly and environmentally damaging, more attention has been paid to the use of renewable energy”, the President added.
Work related to the plan to restore 50,000 acres of degraded forest areas by 2027 was suggested to be expedited, in addition to implementation of appropriate programs in public and water catchment areas to increase forest cover outside forests.
“The importance of increasing forest coverage has been recognized in the context of the global warming trend”, the President said.
