The Musicmatters Collective is proud to introduce their latest artist-in-residence from Sweden, an outstanding pianist - Povel Widestrand.
Povel has been residing in Berlin as a pianist and performer for the past three years. With a solid background in classical piano, Povel’s interest is currently more focused towards more spontaneous music. His trio in Berlin - the Holon Trio - won the 7th European Burghauser young Jazz Prize earlier this year. During his stay in Sri Lanka, Povel has been working on some new music with drummer Sumudi Suraweera and guitarist Sarani Perera which will be featured at this concert, a brief from the Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka said.
Music Concert Prasantha Rupathilaka, a rare exponent of Sri Lankan traditional drumming, is equally experienced and established in both the contemporary music scene as well as Sri Lankan ritual drumming. His own drum ensemble known as the Prasantha Ru Drum Ensemble features some of his best students and percussion music composed and arranged by Prasantha himself. The ensemble's recent performance at the Musicmatters Festival received much acclaim and they will no doubt be inspiring to witness again for a full-length set.
Isuru Kumarasinghe, Musicmatters sound artist will also present a set of spontaneous experimental music in a duo with drummer Harshan Gallage.
