Sri Lanka’s Provincial Council elections are expected to precede the Presidential poll to test the pulse of the people, according to a directive issued by President Maithripala Sirisena to the Election Commission., Presidential Secretariat sources said on Monday.
Legal experts have already advised that the President provincial poll could be held before the presidential, a top official closed to the president said. Provincial elections have been delayed due to the absence of a delimitation report which demarcates electorates for the polls.
President Sirisena has been made to understand by his close advisers that holding provincial poll result will provide a clear indication of the outcome of the presidential election.
The President will be seeking the Supreme Court determination on this matter after consulting the Attorney General soon, he said. (Bandula)
