At least 148 persons died due to drowning during the period of 22 May 2022 to 22 May 2023, said the Diving and Salvage Unit of Sri Lanka Navy.
The main reasons for these deaths are Suicide attempts, misfortunes during fishing, bathing in water bodies under the influence of liquor, engaging in waterborne sports without swimming skill, bathing in unknown water bodies and step into crocodile-infested waters.
Accordingly, 19 incidents were of suicide,18 of misfortune during fishing and 111 of them were of carelessness of people.
The public are urged to be mindful and to take necessary precautions to reduce the occurrence of such drowning incidents.
