Sixteen (16) convicted ex cadres of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were among those who were released today following a Presidential pardon given by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in view of Poson full moon Poya day.
All the detainees were convicted under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and were serving their terms.
Six of them were serving seven years of terms while another six were serving six years. All of them were convicted from 2016 to 2019 even though they were taken into custody in the 2007-2009 period.
Another detainee whose term was to be concluded in December this year was also included.
Fifteen of the PTA detainees were released from Anuradhapura Prisons while one from Jaffna Prisons.
