Seventeen Sri Lankans have been allowed to exit the battle-scarred Palestinian enclave and enter Egypt through the Rafah border crossing.
The group was caught in the Gaza Strip during the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLBFE) has received official notification of this from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Tel Aviv.
SLBFE Media Spokesman Gamini Senarath told a special media conference this morning (November 2) that 15 of these Sri Lankans are anticipated to arrive in Egypt this afternoon.
Mr. Senarath said that in order to help with the evacuation of Sri Lankans who are stuck in Gaza, the Representative Office of Sri Lanka in Palestine and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Israel are cooperating.
Referring Nimal Bandara, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Israel, Mr. Senarath further stated that the 48-year-old father of two from Sri Lanka, who was reported missing since Hamas's blindside attack earlier this month after October 7, is believed to be one of the captives being held by the Islamic militant group.
