A total of 30 navy personnel at the Welisara naval base have tested positive for COVID-19, Army Commander Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva confirmed a short while ago.
Lt. Gen. Silva, who is Head of the National Operation Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19 explained that tests were conducted on navy personnel who shared the same quarters with the sailor who was diagnosed with COVID-19 yesterday (23) after being admitted to the Welikanda hospital in Polonnaruwa. The sailor had been attached to the Welisara Navy Base and had fallen ill after going home on leave.
Twenty-nine sailors more sailors at the camp have tested positive based on these test results.
Lt. Gen. Silva said some sailors who had tested positive had been deployed to track down and detain a group of persons in Suduwella, Js Ela, who had been evading quarantine.
With the number of COVID-19 patients confirmed today, total cases now stand at 368.
