Differently-abled soldiers will be able to obtain artificial limbs from the country’s first 3D printing studio at the Colombo General Hospital, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said.
"The modern technology would help them (soldiers) obtain artificial limbs which would identically match their actual limbs,” Senaratne told reporters recently.
The 3D printing studio is located at the Accident and Orthopedic Unit of the Colombo General Hospital.
Issuing a statement, the Health Ministry said that the scanner of the studio has been imported while the software has been designed locally. The machine can design certain other medical devices in addition to artificial limbs.
Previously, artificial limbs had been designed using Plaster of Paris, at the General Hospital, but the project did not achieve fruition, as the artificial limbs did not match the actual limbs, the statement noted.
