Around 50 families have been affected due to the inclement weather in Ratnapura as of last night, district secretary Malani Lokupothagama said.
Extreme weather conditions in several parts of the island especially Ratnapura forced weather authorities to issue flood and landslide warnings, urging the public to seek places of safety.
Meanwhile, the night mail train from Badulla to Colombo also suspended operations in Nanuoya last night as a result of the bad weather. However, the Railways Department stated that the other trains were functioning as usual.
It is also reported than one person has gone missing while 10 shops had been damaged due to an earthslip which coccured in Ginigathhena in Hatton yesterday.
The sluice gates of the Laxapana, Wimlasurendra and Upper Kotmale dams too have been opened due to heavy downpour in those areas.
Power failures were also reported across seven districts last night after heavy winds uprooted trees and damaged electricity supply lines, the Power and Energy Ministry said.
